Zen Stone - A Visual Journey into Yogācāra's Consciousness-Only
The entire artwork is steeped in soft, beige tones, which can symbolize the "storehouse consciousness" (ālaya-vijñāna) essence of the Eighth Consciousness (Alayavijnana). It is the fundamental ground from which all phenomena arise, containing the seeds of all good, evil, defiled, and pure states, thereby presenting an inclusive yet relatively neutral backdrop.
The topmost white oval in the painting, with its purity and brightness, can be interpreted as the manifestation of pure, wholesome Dharma seeds within the ālaya-vijñāna, untainted by defilement. Its independence and suspension also hint at the momentary birth and cessation of consciousness activities and its non-clinging, non-abiding characteristic.
The black oval in the middle is filled with coarse, mottled, and complex black and white textures. This is precisely the manifestation of various karmic imprints contained within our Eighth Consciousness. These intricate textures represent the complex appearances of the five desires and six defilements of the world, as well as the inverted dreams and attachments arising from sentient beings' ignorance. The interplay of light and shadow and the lines within it are the distinctions and re-presentations of these seeds under the operation of consciousness.
The stable and broad white rectangular base at the bottom symbolizes what Yogācāra Buddhism calls "dependent origination" (paratantra-svabhāva)—all phenomena arise dependently on conditions, contingent upon the transformations of consciousness. The grey, pebble-like object placed upon it is like the "fully imagined nature" (parikalpita-svabhāva) transformed by consciousness—due to the distinctions and attachments of the Sixth Consciousness (Manovijñāna) and the Seventh Consciousness (Manas), the phenomena of dependent origination are mistakenly clung to as truly existent and unchanging entities. The grey tone, then, suggests the uncertainty brought by this clinging. The shadow of this grey form further illustrates that this clinging is not real, but merely a phantom created by consciousness.
Through its abstract composition and colors, this artwork guides the viewer to transcend appearances and deeply contemplate the Consciousness-Only reality where all phenomena are transformations of mind-consciousness. It silently elucidates the Yogācāra principle that "everything is mind-made," inviting us to inwardly reflect and realize that the world we perceive is nothing but the manifestation of our own mind-consciousness, thereby achieving the liberated state of transforming defilement into purity and consciousness into wisdom.
