Zen Stone - A Journey into Inner Stillness and Awakened Insight
In terms of composition, the artwork features several organically shaped "stones" vertically stacked as its main subject. This balanced and organic structure itself hints at the inner harmony and natural order sought in Zen Buddhism. The minimalist layout and soft background colors embody the Zen concept of "emptiness" (空), thus guiding the viewer to let go of complexity and return to inner clarity.
Regarding color symbolism, the beige/light grey background and the light grey block at the bottom create a serene, undisturbed atmosphere, symbolizing the state of mind during Zen meditation. The dark, irregular stone block at the top, with its internal black and white textures and circular specks of light, resembles the shifts and insights deep within consciousness, as well as the search for light within darkness. The pure brown oval beneath it symbolizes the earth, stability, and the foundation of spiritual practice. The second black oval stone from the bottom, with its more complex internal textures and a golden silhouette resembling a Buddha figure or a bell, is arguably the most direct Zen symbol in the work.
The color gold represents wisdom, enlightenment, and the sacred, hinting at the true nature or Buddha-nature that manifests after deep contemplation of internal complexities (the black textures). The white, inverted oval shape at the very bottom might symbolize truth in reflection, the unity of illusion and reality, or the clarity and emptiness (空性) achieved after awakening.
