Zen Stone - Illuminating Innate Full Enlightenment
The Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment states, "Perfect enlightenment is inherently complete."
In the artwork, the stone forms appear both floating and settled, arranged irregularly from top to bottom, resembling both the posture of a meditating Zen practitioner and the process of thoughts moving from agitation to stillness. Each stone is a manifestation of "awakened nature" (觉性), reflecting the pure, original mind inherent in all sentient beings.
The color palette primarily consists of grayish-brown, ink black, and ivory white, with occasional hints of yellow—like "a ray of light amidst ignorance"—subtly yet powerfully conveying the state of sudden enlightenment. The entire piece returns to minimalism: no complex forms, no superfluous words, serving as a visual interpretation of the realm where "emptiness is form, and form is emptiness." The negative space and shadows between the forms create a flowing rhythm, akin to what the sutra describes: "All illusory phenomena, their inherent nature is like an illusion; when the illusion ceases, enlightenment dawns."
The artwork incorporates textured rubbings from the artist's earlier works—splashes of black ink, flowing water stains, and curved lines are all not accidental; they are dreamlike yet real. The inner landscape within each stone is like the viewer's own state of mind: the tranquil see tranquility, the agitated see waves, and the awakened attain enlightenment.
