Zen Stone - A Minimalist Echo of the Heart Sutra's Emptiness
This minimalist composition, with its pristine clarity, reflects the profound meaning of "emptiness" (空) as taught in the Heart Sutra. Within the artwork, four abstract, pebble-like forms are vertically stacked. Their exquisite balance not only hints at Zen harmony and tranquility but, on a deeper level, symbolizes the perfect interdependency and inherent non-self nature of all phenomena.
The use of color is equally restrained yet rich with meaning. The colors of beige, brown, and black, through their stability and subtlety, collectively create a serene atmosphere, as if silently guiding the viewer to release attachments and enter a state of selflessness. The expansive, boundless beige-grey background symbolizes the non-dualistic "emptiness" (空性) revealed by the Heart Sutra—neither increasing nor decreasing, neither defiled nor pure.
Gazing at the top of the artwork, the rough, black stone-like form, with its subtly visible complex textures and mottled light and shadow, appears as a microcosm of worldly phenomena, intricate thoughts, and the vast universe. It forms a striking contrast with the smooth, pure white and brown stone shapes below. This is a visual manifestation of the Heart Sutra's declaration: "Form is no other than emptiness, emptiness no other than form; form is precisely emptiness, emptiness precisely form." From the rough appearance to the clear essence, it is like the process of transcendence from the manifest and formed to the formless and unmanifest.
The two smooth stone shapes at the bottom, white and brown, symbolize the pure foundation and inner tranquility. The brown is like the earth, representing stability and gravitas, the basis from which all things arise; the white is like light, symbolizing awareness and wisdom, illuminating ignorance. Together, they form a solid yet ethereal cornerstone, guiding us back to our original mind.
